Currency Concept

Every once in a while I come across a post about redesigning the currency. Today, FlowingData's post in my Google Reader pointed me to a new currency concept from Mac Funamizo. Not only is the design compelling but it accomplishes a lot of the goals required to improve the usability of coin currency. While the focus of the redesign is on travelers to the US, this concept would also improve the usability for visually impaired citizens. Good stuff.

While I borrowed two images from the site, please be sure to take a look at Mac Funamizo's petitinvention blog. Fanatastic thoughts and concepts.

Interesting. Of course, it dodges a couple of the real issues e.g. why do we still need 1 & 5 cent coins? The non-round idea is fascinating though...

Agreed. You could maybe just cut those out of the lineup altogether. With the rise of plastic, NFC and other mobile payments, one may wonder why bother with paper/physical currency anymore anyway.

At first I wasn't sure if I would, personally, like the wedge pieces, but I can imagine them in my pocket and I think it would sort of be beneficial to be able to know how much change you had without even looking.

In any case, thanks for commenting.
